Is it possible for someone to get your social security number online for free?
I was just wondering if it’s really true. Someone told me that you really can. If you can, how can you protect yourself from identity theft?

Yes it might be possible in some cases.
You can protect your ID by spending a few bucks a month from http://www.esuperfind.com/id-theft-resources.php?id=aoeu
If someone has an open access server and happens to have that SSN in a document or file that is open access, then Google can find the string of numbers in sequence and then display the document and/or the reference in a search.
You can only do the best to only give this number to persons or institutions that you trust. Regardless, we’re all at risk but we can reduce this risk by checking our credit report at least once a year for derogatory remarks and to see who has accessed the report. Then, further shreading this and any other risky documents before discarding.
