Smoke alarms - why would they go off in unison for no apparent reason?
Our smoke alarms all went off in unison tonight for no apparent reason.. I didnt know they could do that for a false alarm? Anyhow, I am worried that as there wasnt a fire, it was due to carbon monoxide, as one of our alarms is a carbon monoxide detector.
How can I check that monoxide isnt an issue for us? What other things can make a fire alarm go off for no reason?

Maybe you only thought they went off. Maybe the sound was actually coming from inside your ear. That’s a common condition called tinnitus.
Another possibility is that they were trying to practice singing in harmony, but it didn’t work, because smoke alarms are tone deaf.
There are only two things that can be wrong with your system. The batteries are low and need to be changed. The other problem is simply that the "element" or "sensor" (for lack of a better term) has gone bad in the detector(s) in which case they will have to be changed.
Well, last year at about this time, all our fire alarms went off too.. it was because all the snow was melting, and some water seeped into the house and short circuted the fire alarm wires, so, you may want to check those. It may be carbon monoxide. If you start to get head aches, or feel light headed.. those are the signs that it may very well be carbon monoxide. Im not sure how to check for carbon monozide though… sorrrrry
Hope this helps
The reason that they went off at the same time is because whom ever installed them abided by the building code that they must be wirded in a series.check to see if they have battery backup if the batteries are weak. if you have a natural gas appliance water heater etc. The utilities Co. will come and check it for you.Dust or dirt can block a photo cell.
