What are the typical contract rules for a home alarm system?
If I get an ADT or similar alarm system installed and meet the 36-month monitoring contract requirement, will I be able to use the alarm system they installed with another monitoring provider? I’ve heard that the system is locked and you can’t use it with other services, but I’m wondering if this is the case even after the 36 months? Thanks for your advice!

Most alarms are made by general electric and they are not locked to any one provider. Your alarm will still function after the contract end if you decide to cancel it. It just will not notify anyone. It will still make a lot of noise and scare off any crooks.
All the door tacks and motion detectors will work with most systems. The only thing that may need to be changed is the key pad.
Most alarm company’s will upgrade your system for free if you decide to choose another provider. So no need to keep out dated equipment.
I highly suggest you shop around before going with ADT. Get quotes from other companies first and compare.
But no, you are free to choose who monitors your system as long as you are not under contract. We do take overs all the time from people that have been with other companies. And sometimes other companies takes our customers. It’s just a matter of a technician re-programming the security panel with a few different account numbers and phone numbers so it sends to their company instead.
